Michaelmas Festival and Conference Celebrating 75 Years of Conferences in the Threefold Community
Threefold Educational Center, Chestnut Ridge, New York
9/26/2008through 9/28/2008
In 1926, a group of New York City Anthroposophists (students of Rudolf Steiner) bought a farm on Hungry Hollow Road in Spring Valley, NY. They named the property Threefold Farm, and immediately set to work on construction and renovation to make the property suitable for summer retreats and conferences. In July 1933, 75 years ago, the first Anthroposophical Summer School was held. The two-week conference featured many European speakers who gave their first North American lectures at Threefold. With the exception of the World War II years, summer conferences have taken place at Threefold every year since then.
The Threefold community was founded with the goal of finding a path towards social, economic and spiritual renewal for the contemporary world: seeking and trying novel paths and structures that could become models for meaningful positive change for all of society. The 2008 Michaelmas Conference, “Honoring the Past—Recognizing the Way Forward,” is both an homage to the origins of the Threefold community, and a conscious step forward for its founding mission.
This September, the Threefold Community will mark the 75th Anniversary of the first Anthroposophical Summer School at Threefold Farm with a three-day Michaelmas conference. Conference presenters and participants will span the generations, from representatives of Threefold’s early years to newly minted activists who are committed to effecting genuine social change today. The conference will celebrate the coming together of diverse perspectives to imagine creative ways in which new social, educational and economic impulses can take root and flourish.
Cost for the weekend is $100 ($50 for students and seniors), not including housing or food.

Chris Harp will explain and demonstrate the latest sustainable/organic methods in a day-long workshop. Weather permitting, participants will have an opportunity to practice hands-on techniques in the Pfeiffer Center apiary.
This workshop is intended for beekeepers, beginning, intermediate, and advanced, who are searching for ways to preserve and enhance the health of honeybees. Participants are assumed to have some experience with beekeeping, as basic beekeeping will not be covered.
Chris Harp is an organic beekeeper and bee doctor with 17 years experience. He is a co-founder of HoneybeeLives in New Paltz, NY. He currently cares for approximately 160 hives in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Vermont for small farms and private clients. He conducts classes and workshops on organic beekeeping throughout the region.
Chris is focused on the well-being of the colonies he nurtures, and on raising public awareness and knowledge of the Honeybee.
The Agriculture Course: An Intensive Study of the Origins and Future of Biodynamics
The Pfeiffer Center, Chestnut Ridge, NY
1/15/2009through 1/19/2009
In his Agriculture lectures of 1924, Rudolf Steiner observed that modern agricultural practices – such as the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers, monoculture, and specialization – were depleting the soil and yielding produce and livestock of ever-declining vitality. In response, Steiner offered a revolutionary approach to agriculture, one that treats the farm as an organism, contained in itself yet worked upon from outside by multitudes of unseen and often unacknowledged forces.
In eight lectures delivered over nine days at Koberwitz, Silesia, Steiner outlined the “Spiritual Foundations for the Renewal of Agriculture” – the basis for reversing the decline of agriculture by understanding and working with all the elements of the farm organism.
In the 84 years since, countless men and women have worked in every corner of the globe to understand, apply, and refine Steiner’s indications. In January 2009, some of BD’s leading exponents and practitioners will gather at the historic Threefold Educational Center – site of Ehrenfried Pfeiffer’s pioneering work from the 1930s until the 1960s – to study and share their knowledge about the origins and future of Biodynamics. Like the original course, this four-day seminar will include time for artistic activities, discussion, and hearty meals, and participants are expected to leave with much new knowledge – and many new questions as well.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not an introductory course. Participants must be familiar with the Agriculture lectures and have a working knowledge of Biodynamics.
